Where are they now: Face Palette

There’s something magical and so visually pleasing about palettes, seeing all the beautiful colors together in harmony always makes me so happy! Today I’m sharing with y’all the 3 OG face palettes I got when I first started exploring makeup, and where are they now.

One of my most reached for of the 3 is the NARS Virtual Domination Blush Palette. This was the holiday palette from 2014 (one currently available here), it comes with a very wearable everyday bronzer Laguna and 3 very beautiful and versatile blush, perfect for any occasion. This palette has been my most reached for/favorite to take on a trip because of the variety of blush shades it offers, so I can pick and choose or mix and match. I don’t use the highlight in this one as much mainly because it’s not as pigmented on my skin, and at the moment I’m really liking the “in your face” highlight, the highlighter in this palette however, would be nice for someone that wants a nice subtle glow that lasts all day!

Second is the now too dark for my face Urban Decay Naked Flushed in Strip. I was fairly tan up until this past winter, so my earlier days makeup are all on the darker side, and I used to use this all the time because the NARS Laguna was also too light for me at the time. I love the color of the bronzer and blush, and have just recently started using the highlight (yes I’m a little behind on the highlight on fleek trend), but the fact that the bronzer is a tad too dark for me now have me looking the other way when I try to decide which bronzer to use in the morning. Hopefully in the summer I’ll be able to use this a lot more.

Last (and least reached for until the past few months, unfortunately) is the Tarte Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay Eye & Cheek Palette. I really really love the color of the blush, and the eye shadows are actually really nice as well, but I haven’t been reaching for this one much mainly because a) the bronzer color was too light for me when I got this palette so I didn’t use it for the longest time till recently, and b) I still keep it in it’s original box for storing convenience and it’s not the easiest to get out/put away. I’m looking forward to using this more tho now that the bronzer will actually show up on my face! I have not give the highlighter in this platter a try yet so that’s another thing on my to-try list.

Overall, each palette has it’s place and time for me, but none is do-it-all. I like the varieties and options of the NARS palette, but would prefer to have a matte bronzer than one with shimmer and have a more pigmented highlight. Love the formula of the Urban Decay, and have considered getting the same palette in a lighter shade but I’m the type of person that likes to try everything… I enjoy the Tarte palette, but find it not as pigmented as the other two on my skin. I would say they each have their pros and cons, but there are also so many other palettes out there I need to try so I have hopes that one day I’ll find a perfect face palette for me!

What is your favorite face palette? I would love some suggestions!

There are 2 item I want to highlight today because they’re kind of new to my stash and makeup rotation, and I’m simply in love. The first one is the Stila Eyes Are the Window Shadow Palette that I finally got the courage to dip my brush in after admiring how beautiful it is for weeks (am I the only one that is afraid to use something because it just looks too perfect?), it is simply amazing and probably deserve a post on its own. Then it’s the Charlotte Tilbury Rock n Kohn Iconic Liquid Eye Pencil I bought on a whim because I’ve been wanting to try her products, and the formula is the best I’ve tried yet – no budge and no transfer after a day out and about? Sold!

Mixing up my daily makeup, today I’m forgoing my standard eyeliner and using some eye shadow instead.  I’m loving the colors in this palette as it’s not the normal nude, but still looks natural enough on your eyes.  It’s also nice to have an all in one palette for my face that includes a blush, a bronzer and a highlighter, no need to worry about packing multiple items when you’re on the go.

Eyeshadow and I weren’t friends before this year, mainly because I didn’t know how to apply it and I always thought I look weird with them on, but now that I’m slowly getting used to applying it, I find that eyeshadow works very well when you’re in a hurry.  A swipe on the lids and using your fingers to blend if you’re on the go without having to worry about precision like when you’re using a liner.

I’m also turning to lipsticks more and more recently because my lips get so pale and dry in the winter which looks terrible.  I’m currently loving the neutral colors and the formula of the Patisserie, and am considering investing in another MAC lipstick, I see a little haul in the near future…

Baby snake

Every since I was little my parents try to collect snake (shape/print) related items for me whenever they can because I’m a snake baby (born in the Year of the Snake, that is).  It has become a thing for my family to share with each other whenever we see a cool snake print or product in a snake shape, so when I saw this Tarte Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay Eye & Cheek Palette with a color scheme that’s right up my alley, I had to get it for myself.

The contrast of the wood print and the gold of the snake is beyond beautiful, and the purple jewel on the snake is a very nice touch.  When you take a second to think about it, the colors and textures used on the design fits so nicely with what’s inside the palette – matte browns, glittery golds, and purple jeweled tones.  Definitely an ah-ha moment for me when I realize that, props to the packaging designer at Tarte, very clever indeed!

I really love the sultry orchid hue eyeshadow in this palette, not only is it very fall/winter appropriate, it has everything you need to create any look you want, natural, smokey, a pop of color, you name it!  The highlighter has just the right amount of shimmer and the bronzer is just dark enough for me to create a contrast without being overly dramatic (perfect for a beginner like me).  The blush is a rosy pink with a hint of plum and brown and appears to have a hint of coral as well when applied, it looks great for an everyday look!  Some reviews claim it doesn’t blend as evenly but I didn’t really have a problem with that, but again I’m not that sensitive to this kind of stuff…  This palette looks like it’ll be very versatile as the colors are great for everyday looks and for all the holiday festivities.  I can’t wait to play around with it more!

This past weekend was the Sephora VIB Holiday Shopping Event, and I have to admit I went a little crazy…  But putting my purchases all together, most of them are items I needed/have been lacking, so I think I did okay, not a lot of splurging in my opinion, haha.  I ordered them online and just received my package in the mail yesterday, so I’m a little behind on sharing my purchases, but here they are!

First up are the 2 face brushes – the Sephora Pro Angled Blush Brush #49 and the Sephora Pro Flawless Bronzer Brush #46.  I got the Pro Airbrush #55 a while back and really love the quality of it, it’s very soft and picks up the right amount of product for me, so I decided to go ahead and grab 2 more that I need.  The blush brush is long and thin, light weight and easy to handle so you can avoid a heavy hand of blush on your cheeks.  The size of the bronzer brush is perfect for me, as it’s more chubby and shorter which makes it easier to grip and apply pressure when need be.

Next up are the eye brushes!  Since I started learning how to apply eye shadows, I realized how important and how big of a difference a nice brush can make.  I already have the Mac 217, but needed something small and flat to create tighter lines on the lower lids, so I picked up the Bobbi Brown Eye shadow Brush as I have a travel set and really liked the quality of their brushes.  I also wanted to try out different brands since I’m still fairly new to this and want to figure out which brand I like the most, so I got the Hourglass Domed Shadow Brush – a small, densely packed brush perfect for buffing and blending the outer corners.  And FYI, Hourglass brushes are PETA-friendly!  Which is a super plus in my book.

Now onto the staples.  I’m running low on my pencil eyeliner, but I really don’t like the glitter in my current one and also hate the fact that it transfer onto my eyelid throughout the day, so I picked up the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Demolition – a deep matte brown that is perfect for my everyday makeup.  I’ve heard a lot of good things about this so hopefully it won’t disappoint.  I also picked up the Anastasia Brow Wiz in Soft Brown, not that I’m running low on brow pencils as I have 2 in rotation right now, but they’re both kind of chubby at the tips which means I can only use them  to fill in and can’t really create any texture to my brows.  After seeing a lot of the reviews on the Brow Wiz and how you can literally draw in individual eyebrow hair with it, I was intrigued.  It is a lot thinner than I’m used to, which is a good sign but also scary because I’m not used to it, I will have to do a few test run with it and decide how I feel about it.

Last but not least, the Tarte Limited-Edition Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay Eye & Cheek Palette – a palette that has a gorgeous packaging, with neutral and sultry orchid hue eye shadows and everything you need for your cheeks (bronzer/highlighter/blush) inside.  This one is definitely more of a splurge as I don’t really NEED another eye shadow palette, but there’s also a cheek palette inside which I kind of need so that’s how I justified the purchase…  And honestly at first this palette caught my eyes because of the packing (more on that later), but when I saw what’s inside, I knew I had to have it.  The colors are simply beautiful, and the fact that it has everything for both eyes and cheeks makes it the perfect traveling palette to bring with you.  This palette however, is a limited edition item and is now sold out on Sephora, the last time I check Macy’s still has them in stock, so if you want it better act quick!

What do you think of the items I picked up?
