Where are they now: Face Palette

There’s something magical and so visually pleasing about palettes, seeing all the beautiful colors together in harmony always makes me so happy! Today I’m sharing with y’all the 3 OG face palettes I got when I first started exploring makeup, and where are they now.

One of my most reached for of the 3 is the NARS Virtual Domination Blush Palette. This was the holiday palette from 2014 (one currently available here), it comes with a very wearable everyday bronzer Laguna and 3 very beautiful and versatile blush, perfect for any occasion. This palette has been my most reached for/favorite to take on a trip because of the variety of blush shades it offers, so I can pick and choose or mix and match. I don’t use the highlight in this one as much mainly because it’s not as pigmented on my skin, and at the moment I’m really liking the “in your face” highlight, the highlighter in this palette however, would be nice for someone that wants a nice subtle glow that lasts all day!

Second is the now too dark for my face Urban Decay Naked Flushed in Strip. I was fairly tan up until this past winter, so my earlier days makeup are all on the darker side, and I used to use this all the time because the NARS Laguna was also too light for me at the time. I love the color of the bronzer and blush, and have just recently started using the highlight (yes I’m a little behind on the highlight on fleek trend), but the fact that the bronzer is a tad too dark for me now have me looking the other way when I try to decide which bronzer to use in the morning. Hopefully in the summer I’ll be able to use this a lot more.

Last (and least reached for until the past few months, unfortunately) is the Tarte Rainforest After Dark Colored Clay Eye & Cheek Palette. I really really love the color of the blush, and the eye shadows are actually really nice as well, but I haven’t been reaching for this one much mainly because a) the bronzer color was too light for me when I got this palette so I didn’t use it for the longest time till recently, and b) I still keep it in it’s original box for storing convenience and it’s not the easiest to get out/put away. I’m looking forward to using this more tho now that the bronzer will actually show up on my face! I have not give the highlighter in this platter a try yet so that’s another thing on my to-try list.

Overall, each palette has it’s place and time for me, but none is do-it-all. I like the varieties and options of the NARS palette, but would prefer to have a matte bronzer than one with shimmer and have a more pigmented highlight. Love the formula of the Urban Decay, and have considered getting the same palette in a lighter shade but I’m the type of person that likes to try everything… I enjoy the Tarte palette, but find it not as pigmented as the other two on my skin. I would say they each have their pros and cons, but there are also so many other palettes out there I need to try so I have hopes that one day I’ll find a perfect face palette for me!

What is your favorite face palette? I would love some suggestions!

Sephora VIB sale – What I got

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Now that I’m officially done with the move (insert happy emoji here), I finally have time to unbox my goodies from the Sephora VIB sale a few weeks ago!  I haven’t had enough time to test them out yet but I wanted to show you the items I got because I’m extremely excited about them!

First let’s get the not so exciting items out of the way… I got the NARS Pencil Sharpener because I’m planning on getting a lip liner in pencil form in the near future, and really would prefer not mixing sharpeners for eyeliner and lip liner.  The Fresh Sugar Lip Polish is something I’ve been meaning to try, I’ve never exfoliated my lips before since I never felt the need to, but with me using more and more lipsticks I think my pout deserves some more love!  I’m excited to try this out and see what the hype of exfoliating is all about.

And now the more exciting items!  The Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, I’ve been reading/seeing/hearing a lot about this eyeliner and have been itching to try, though I really like my Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner, it never hurts to shop around.  Instead of my usual brown shade, I decided to go with the black this time because I think a wing is not the same without jet black eyeliner.  Another makeup related item is the Benefit Gimme Brow, this is an item that has been on my wishlist since last year, I opt for the Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel when I first started blogging and thought it was only okay, the brush was a little too big for my liking so I wanted to try something else.  I did stick it out and used it up before purchasing something else though *pat self on back*.  Last and certainly not least, I gave in and got the Stila Eyes Are the Window Shadow Palette, finally!  I’ve been eyeing this palette ever since I saw it on heyclaire‘s favorites video, and with the 15% off deal I just couldn’t say no even though I don’t really need another neutral palette.  You guys all know my all time favorite palette is the Lorac Pro and I haven’t tried anything else ever since I got that palette… So I’m excited to see how this one compares!

Hope y’all had a great weekend, let me know if you did a little splurging during the VIB sale as well and what you end up getting!

Sephora VIB sale – What I got

On my face today #10 (Spring makeup that holds)

This past weekend while at the Drink the District Cherry Blossom Beer and Wine Festival, I got a compliment from a stranger about my eye makeup while I had my sunglasses on!  I was definitely shocked but am very flattered.  Thank you, lovely stranger for stopping by and telling me that my eye makeup looks great, it meant a a lot to me!

I was very proud of my makeup for that day because on top of getting a nice compliment, after being out for the whole afternoon and most of the nights, my makeup still looks fresh and put together at the end of the night.  It was the first time I used a primer and concealer (I forgot about foundation…) and it shows how a proper base will help your makeup stay put for a whole day!  I can only imagine how much better doing it properly with foundation will do.

Today I’m recreating the look I did for this past weekend and going over the items I used.  I’m excited I found something that works for me and I think this long lasting base and look will be my going out standard this spring!

  1. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer Protect Broad Spectrum SPF 30
I love how light weight this primer is, I don’t like any heavy on my face so something light weight with light coverage is perfect for me.  I got this sample a while back but never used it till now because I don’t like to use foundation unless I’m going out.
  2. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer in Light
I got this shade right before I went out and stood in the sun for 5+ hours… now I think medium will match my current skin color better, oops.
  3. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube – Original
My go to primer for eyeshadow.  I also love the Lorac one and rotate between them.

  1. Lorac Pro Palette
Favorite eyeshadow palette of all time.  Need I say more?
  2. NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette
Loving the variety of blush color in this palette.  I also like how natural the contour/bronzing shade Laguna looks on my skin, it is definitely more of a bronzing color for me instead of contour.
  3. Anastasia Brow Wiz in Soft Brown
My go to brow pencil, I love how the nib is small enough you can create fake brow hair but at the same time if you are in a hurry you can also use it to fill in quickly.  The color also works very well with me!  But I might consider getting a light shade if I decide to get my hair color lighten this spring/summer.
  4. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Brown
The only liquid eye liner I’ve tried so far and I really like it.  I like how easily it applies and it doesn’t budge at all for 24 hours.  Stay all day indeed.  I’m recently starting to get into black eyeliner so I might get the black one once I’m done with this one.
  5. Buxom Lash Mascara (not pictured)
Another sample sized item, I even forgot to put it in the pictures when I was setting this up because… I rarely use mascara that I completely forgot about this step.  I don’t have much opinion on it as I’m not too picky when it comes to mascara as long as it doesn’t smudge and this one does the job!

On my face today #7

It’s been a while since I did my last On My Face Today post, and I thought it’s time to give you guys an update!

During the winter time, I get really lazy about putting on makeup in the morning because that extra 10 minutes you get under your blanket is just so worth it!  So recently I’ve been keeping things very simple, necessities only.

Five things

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

As I slowly become more and more familiar with makeup, I decide to revisit this topic I saw on some blogs a while back.  If you could have only 5 makeup items for the rest of your life, what would they be?  I still don’t use much makeup on a day to day bases, but I think I’m now able to pick out 5 things.  So here is my list:

1. Anastasia Brow Wiz – If I can only have one makeup item for the rest of my life, a brow pencil will be it.  I’m very insecure about my eyebrows, or the lack thereof…  So I usually never leave the house without filling them in.  I’ve tried many different brow pencils (to be honest this is probably the makeup item I have the most experience in) and the Anastasia Brow Wiz stands out the most!  I like the fact it’s a twist-up so you don’t have to worry about the up keeping, and I also like how the nib is tiny which makes it easy to create individual brow hair and make them look more natural than just filling in.  I also love the fact that it comes with a spoolie so it’s great to take on the go.

2. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil – Eye liner definitely comes in second on my most used makeup item list.  I really love them in pencil form, but have been having so many problem with the liner transferring to my upper lids throughout the day.  I find that liquid liner works better with holding it’s place, but I just love how convenient eye pencils are.  So for my pick I decided to go with the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye pencil because it is by far the least transferable pencil and I also love all the options you get (for me though I stick with the matte brown).

3. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector – This is one of the first product I purchased because of blogging, I decided to gave this a try because I read about it on Vivianna Does Makeup, I only have one color currently and definitely plan on purchasing more.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I absolutely love this product, it’s the perfect balance of great moisturizing and color!

4. NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette – I personally don’t use a lot of face product (i.e. foundation, primer, BB cream) because I really dislike the feeling of putting creamy/oily stuff on my face, it always make me feel like my face is extra greasy and cannot breath.  I’m really lucky that I have no visible pores, not a lot of redness or unequal coloring, and relatively smooth skin (thanks mama Shyu), so when it comes to giving my face a more lively look, I opt for just using this cheek palette to add some colors and definition to it.  It has 3 different blush, a bronzer and a highlighter, it’s the perfect one stop shop for your face.

5. Lorac Pro Palette – I’m very lucky that I found the eyeshadow of my dreams so early on in my makeup journey.  I am seriously in love with the Lorac Pro Palette and its formula, it has the perfect mix of matte and shimmer that blends so well together, and the colors are so gorgeous on the eyelids.  I am not a everyday eyeshadow gal, but I’m trying to be, and if I could only use one for the rest of my life, this would be it.

Five things

Dreamy palette

I know I’m a little late one this, but I’ve been distracted by the holiday and are now finally getting around to this pretty little thing.  I got this palette last month and have been taking it with me everywhere I go during the holiday, I just can’t get enough of it!  The NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette is indeed a beauty.

At first I was worried that some of the colors in the palette might be too light for my skin tone, but when I tried them on I fell in love with all the blushes in this palette.  The highlighter was a little too shimmery for me, but it was perfect for the holiday. The famous Laguna bronzer is beautiful, a very subtle bronzer for my skin tone, perfect for when I want a little color on my face but no something too intense.  Last but not least, the packaging is just simply amazing!  The gorgeous design on the palette is unlike the normal matte NARS packaging, it’s fun, festive, elegant and very interesting.

I’m so glad I got this palette, it was definitely worth the investment and the “almost full size” size will sure last me a while!

Midweek treats from Sephora

I have a love hate relationship with those marketing emails that have keywords like % off, free samples, buy one get one.  Recently I got suckered into buying some things on Sephora that I’ve been wanting to try but have not been able to justify buying, until I saw the “free mini fragrance sample with purchase” deal, in which I will dig deeper into about my recent mini fragrance craze in my next blog post.

So far I’m loving all the items I purchased!  Here’s a list and review.

NARS Matte Multiple – I saw so many reviews and blog posts about this product and have been wanting to try it for a while now.  Upon receiving it I immediately went to try it on, I fell in love and am very satisfied with the color!  I got the color Anguilla mainly for the purpose of using it as a blush, it blends in really easily with either a brush or your fingers which is nice for a person like me that don’t have a lot of brushes in my possession.  My skin is somewhat tan and sometimes it takes a lot for a pink color like that to show up, so I was very happy to see the color being so highly pigmented.  And of course the NARS packaging is always easy on the eyes.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner – I’ve always been a pencil girl, I’ve never purchase a liquid or gel eyeliner in my life, till now.  Using a pencil eyeliner is just more comfortable for me, but I finally gave in and purchased this liquid eyeliner because I’m so tired of my current eyeliner (and most of the pencil form eyeliner I’ve tried) blending, smudging and not having crisp lines.  After reviewing my options, I picked the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner.  It stayed on all day, kept a clean crisp line throughout and did not smudge, I was happy when I looked into the mirror at the end of the day.  I’ve not tried to wear it to the beach or pool yet, but I was able to easily remove the eye liner by washing my face which is no good in my book for a waterproof eye liner.  Regardless, I’m still very happy with this purchase because being waterproofed was not a criteria for me when I was looking for in a new eye liner, I just happened to purchase one that’s named “waterproof”.  But if you’re looking for something you can go to the beach or pool with, I don’t think I would recommend it.

Josie Maran Bear Naked Wipes – Since my recent relocation from ATL to DC, I haven’t had time to snatch a bag of my go to makeup wipe Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes out of pure laziness, so while I was on the Sephora website I thought to myself, why not try something new?  After reading the reviews seeing the packaging I picked out this Bear Naked Wipes by Josie Maran.  It has a citrus-y scent, is very gentle on the skin (I used it to remove my eye makeup without any irritations) and is reasonably priced at $12 for 30 wipes.  On top of that, a portion of every Bear Naked Wiped sold will go towards protecting polar bears by supporting the NRDCs Polar Bear SOS initiative.  A good cause and a good product, count me in!
