A little Diptyque family

I was first introduced to Diptyque candles by my friend Jess from Rose & Fig. At first I was kind of skeptical about a $60 candle and thought it was a little ridiculous, but after hearing her rave about them I ended up getting 2 as birthday gifts to myself and fell in love with them.

I recently finished the last bits of my Baies candle from my first purchase more than a year ago, and just when I was contemplating on if I should purchase another one right away or wait till the holiday I found out that Diptyque was on sale at Hautelook, so I immediately hopped online to purchase some. I ended up getting the 3 holiday scents they came out with last year – Hiver (winter), Epice (spice), and Resine (pine) – in minis, and a regular sized Jonquille (daffodil). It’s really tricky to buy candles online since you can only read about how they smell like instead of actually smelling them, but to my relief I love the scent of all 4 candles I got. They’re all smell amazing, even without burning.

The packaging for them are beautiful as always! The Jonquille is the standard Diptyque candle holder, clear glass with white decal and a great size that will come in handy as a holder for your makeup or brushes later on. And can we just take a moment to admire the gorgeous packaging for the minis? They are last year’s holiday edition so they have a different design compare to their standard candle – Colored glass with gold accent and white logo. Seriously, they are just too beautiful. I purposefully purchased the minis instead of the regular sized ones because I prefer the design of them more (buying things based on their packaging… very typical of me). They would be beautiful to put around the house, and since they’re small you won’t have to worry about the colors being too obtrusive. Once they’re done burning you can use them to hold your cotton buds, bobby pins, put a tea light in for some ambient lighting in the room or simply leave them as is. Regardless of where you put them, they would be a nice addition to any room! I’ve been keeping them in their boxes because I’m waiting till after I move to my new apartment to start burning them, but I cannot wait!

Overall I’m happy with this purchase, but not exactly thrilled about the quality of product I received. As you can see the surface of all candles are slanted, like they were melted and re-solidified at an angle. I assume this was either due to poor quality control or heat during transport, nonetheless it’s annoying. At least my purchase was for personal use and I can overlook the imperfections (once the event ends they can’t request more items from the vendor, therefore you cannot do an exchange if your order is damaged, only refund), but if I was purchasing these as gifts I don’t think I would be comfortable gifting them because they look like something you’d pick up from the clearance section because they were damaged… Just something to keep in mind when shopping on sites like this.

Falling for Jo Malone

There are so many things to love about Jo Malone, from the beautifully layered scents to the simple, elegant packaging. Ever since I saw the brand and their offerings from different blogs, I was not able to get it out of my head.

After visiting their counters multiple times and trying out different scent samples, I finally decided on one to start! To my surprise I actually didn’t go with the original one I thought I was going to get, which was the Blackberry & Bay – A beautiful, refreshing and upbeat fruity scent. I ended up falling in love with the Nectarine Blossom & Honey – A soft, mellow, and sweet mix of peaches and honey, which I tried during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Early Access. The scent is very comforting but at the same time very refreshing and summery, I think it’s perfect for the season and will be great to mix and match with some other scent in the future as well.

During my visit to the counter, I also looked around at their candles (because honestly, who doesn’t love a great candle?) and fell in love with the White Lilac & Rhubarb candle – A mix of fruity, floral and refreshing scent that smells like a summer garden in a candle. It is a limited edition candle with special packaging that helps support the community gardens (you can read more about each of the projects they’re helping here). Not only was the candle for a good cause and smells amazing, but the colorful printed packaging is unlike traditional Jo Malone candles and will be a great decor that adds a touch of summer in any home.

This was definitely a splurge, but I truly believe a good bottle of fragrance really makes a difference of a person’s appearance and presentation, and with the new apartment’s move in date around the corner, I’m excited to have a great candle to accompany me at my new home!

FullSizeRenderI scored these awesome smelling candles from T.J. Maxx a few weeks ago, they’re made by this brand called DW Home based in California, I’ve never heard of them but I’m really glad I stumble upon them!  I love the minimalist branding and packaging, and for those of you that knows me know that a good packaging design is definitely one of my weaknesses, especially ones I can save and use for other purposes later on (I’m envisioning one of them being my new brush holder and the other a mini flower vase for the room!).  The woodwick is unlike any candle I’ve ever purchased, I was kind of skeptical at first thinking it will burn through the candle really quickly, but I’m pleasantly surprised and almost think I prefer the woodwick because since they hold their shape you don’t have to worry about it burning off center and creating an uneven burn in your candle.

I love them both, but right now I especially love the Alpine Citrus because it reminds me of Christmas, and sitting by the fire with a big Christmas tree by your side is one of the most relaxing scene I can think of during the colder months.  The Black Rose Oud is also very beautiful, more on the sweet floral side that will be very fitting for spring.  I don’t think they’re widely available yet, so if you’re interested in trying one make sure to keep an eye out when you’re at T.J. Maxx!

My beauty corner has gotten a little out of control recently, overflowing with mostly skin care product and some makeup I got in the past few month that I just haven’t been able to find a permanent home for yet.  During my lunch break at T.J.Maxx I stumble upon this set of little plastic containers that reminds me of the MUJI ones, so I picked them up for a long overdue bathroom counter organization.

There are 6 pieces in this set, and each of them are sized perfectly for my needs.  I used the largest one for all my skin care products for my face, the long narrow one for my eyeshadow palettes and my blush/bronzer set (they fit perfectly!), the medium one for my hair care products, and the 3 small ones are housing my eye cream, mascara/eye primer, and miscellaneous items.  I’m also utilizing my empty Dyptique candle holder as my eyeliner/brow pencil holder, and a little white planter from IKEA for my brushes.

Overall I have to be honest, I didn’t save a whole lot of space on my counter, but these little containers did help everything fit in a organized way, I know exactly where to reach when I need an item, and where to put it back once I’m done with it instead of just letting it flow around the counter.  There are definitely room for improvement, and at my next place I’m definitely considering investing in a vanity table where I can sit comfortably and do my makeup.  But for now I’m just glad it looks more put together on my counter!

Baies

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I finally cracked open my Diptyque Baies candle!  I was very excited to start this one because a lot of bloggers claim this as their favorite.  After opening it and lighting it I have to say, it is a beautiful scent but it’s a little too strong for my taste.  I really love the subtle scent of Figuier because it’s very calming and relaxing, the Baies on the other hand is stronger, in your face and kind of wakes me up when I smelled it.  Baies is a good day time scent where you want to be awake, are moving around and being more active, but a little too much for a night where you just want to rest, which is usually when I like to light a candle.

I enjoy both my Diptyque candles in different ways, tho they’re definitely on the expensive side and are more of a “once in a while splurge” item, they’re nice to have on the days where you just need a little pick me up.  It’s really hard for me to find a scent that I’m comfortable with, so I’m glad I had a good experience with Diptyque on my first try.

What’s your favorite Diptyque scent and what do you think I should try next?

Everyday hydration

EOS

When these cute rounded EOS lip balm first came out, I was attracted by their colorfulness, but kind of skeptical about how practical the shape is in terms of carrying it around in a purse and the quality of the balm.  Though it was all over magazines and have many celebrity endorsements, I was not convinced.

After weeks of the EOS being out and me running out of my stable Maybelline Baby Lips, I finally decided to give it a try.  The container has a soft rubber/silicone feel which is comforting when holding, and the quality of the balm is surprisingly awesome.  Not only does it smell good, it keeps my lips hydrated for an extended period of time.  After getting my first one I’m hooked, so the other day at Costco I picked up the variety pack without hesitation (which by the way, ah-mazing deal), EOS will definitely be a stable in my purse for the foreseeable future.

Birthday splurge – Diptyque

diptyque candle oval set

To celebrate the special two five, I finally gave in and purchased these delicious-smelling things one of my best friends Native Blonde keeps raving about.  Thanks to her email and blog, I was presented with some good options on where to purchase.  I decided to go with the BeautyBar deal – 20% off using code: AFF20BEAUTYBAR on the already on sale Figuier oval and candle set.  And on top of the Figuier oval/candle set, I also got the Baies candle so I can reach $75 to received their free samples (No girl can pass on the change to get some awesome free stuff, right?).

I’ve smelled the Figuier before and really enjoyed how relaxing it is, so purchasing the set was a no brainer.  I picked the Baies, one of their most popular scent because the description says scent has a bouquet of roses and black currant leaves, and I am a sucker for the smell of flowers.  I’m very excited about it and am hoping it will impress me.

So far I’m only using the oval from the set because my selective OCD doesn’t like to have multiple scents in the apartment, and I want to be able to smell them individually without any distractions to see how I feel about them for future reference.  Therefore I will have more updates on the Baies candle once the oval is done, which might take a while consider the oval is supposed to diffuse perfume for about 3 months (not that I’m complaining).
